Capital of Culture Secrets

Hi there,

First of all, let me tell you that the week with you in Liverpool was great. I think our group was very harmonious and it was fun to get to know you all. I also enjoyed exploring Liverpool, and so it is really hard for me to pick a certain event as my highlight.

An entirely new experience for me was the job shadowing. I was one of the people who went to Liverpool Culture Company thanks to Mark’s organization. Isabel, who advised Anna and me, was very nice. We split up the one-day shadowing into two halves and we went there on Friday and Tuesday. On Friday, we attended a meeting with a delegation from a city which will be capital of culture in some years. The people of Liverpool Culture Company provided them with information on financing and organizing such a big project and later on a professor of the university talked about the impact the title “Capital of Culture” has on a city even after the year of celebration. To me, this was an insight into the organization of an event like “European Capital of Culture” you would not normally gain and I thought it was really interesting.

On Tuesday, I went to Isabel’s office to get a closer look at her duties in the Culture Company. I met her boss and some of her co-workers, who all talked to me, asked me where I came from and how I liked the city and the events they organized… Even though I had to do the typical paperwork when I was at the office, the afternoon was very interesting because of the people I met. One of the last tasks Isabel gave me was surprising: She had received an Email from a division of Dortmund’s “Ruhr.2010” project. (The Ruhr Area will be Capital of Culture in 2010.) I had to translate their request, which was for some information about one of the projects Liverpool did this year because they want to do something similar. This project has not yet been made official and I am one of the few people who know about it!

All in all, the job shadowing was exciting and gave me a great overview of one of the professional fields I will also be able to work in when I have finished my studies.

I hope the other job shadowers enjoyed their shadowing as much as I did and I really hope you all had fun during your week in the European Capital of Culture!

Best wishes,

Lisa
